Follow on LinkedInThe months in Spanish are enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, and diciembre. Write them in lowercase in ordinary sentences. To give a date, put the day before the month and connect them with de: el 15 de mayo means “May 15” or “the 15th of May.”
The Real Academia Española's dictionary defines mes as each of the twelve periods into which the year is divided. Its guidance on capital letters says month names normally begin with lowercase, while its date guidance covers common orders and written forms. These sources establish standard spelling and general conventions; they do not determine every house style, calendar system, or local date format.
The 12 months in Spanish
The pronunciation cue is an English-speaking memory aid, not phonetic transcription. Stress is shown in capitals. Listen to a speaker whose accent matches your goal before treating any cue as a sound model.
| English | Spanish | Approximate cue | Spelling and stress note | Example date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | enero | eh-NEH-roh | Stress ne | el 8 de enero |
| February | febrero | feh-BREH-roh | Keep the first r light | el 14 de febrero |
| March | marzo | MAR-soh | The z varies by accent | el 3 de marzo |
| April | abril | ah-BREEL | Final stress; no written accent | el 22 de abril |
| May | mayo | MAH-yoh | The y varies by accent | el 1 de mayo |
| June | junio | HOO-nyoh | Stress ju | el 10 de junio |
| July | julio | HOO-lyoh | Distinguish it from junio | el 20 de julio |
| August | agosto | ah-GOHS-toh | Stress gos | el 6 de agosto |
| September | septiembre | sep-TYEM-breh | setiembre is also recorded | el 12 de septiembre |
| October | octubre | ohk-TOO-breh | Keep the middle stress | el 31 de octubre |
| November | noviembre | noh-BYEM-breh | Stress viem | el 9 de noviembre |
| December | diciembre | dee-SYEM-breh | Stress ciem | el 24 de diciembre |
The opening sounds in junio and julio are alike, so learners often swap the two. Attach each to a personal date or event instead of drilling them only as a pair. For the relationship between letter names and sounds, use the Spanish alphabet guide.
Write Spanish month names in lowercase
English normally writes “January” with a capital; Spanish normally writes enero with a lowercase initial. The same rule applies to the other eleven month names:
Mi cumpleaños es en octubre.
My birthday is in October.
La reunión es el 4 de diciembre.
The meeting is on December 4.
A month may still receive a capital because it begins a sentence, appears in a title styled that way, or belongs inside a larger proper name. That exception does not turn the ordinary month name into a proper noun. When translating a calendar from English, change the case deliberately instead of copying its capitalisation.
Septiembre is the widely taught form for September. The RAE dictionary also records setiembre. A learner does not need to alternate between them: choose the spelling used by the people or organisation you communicate with, and keep it consistent inside one document.
Build a date with de
A dependable spoken and written pattern is:
el + day number + de + month + optional de + year
| Job | Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name a date | el + number + de + month | el 7 de abril | April 7 |
| Add a year | el + number + de + month + de + year | el 7 de abril de 2027 | April 7, 2027 |
| Say something happens in a month | en + month | Viajo en agosto. | I travel in August. |
| Ask the date | ¿Qué fecha es? | ¿Qué fecha es la cita? | What date is the appointment? |
| Ask today's date | ¿A cuántos estamos? | Estamos a 12 de marzo. | What is today's date? / It is March 12. |
The article el belongs to the date expression in examples such as La clase es el 9 de junio. Use en when the month is the broader time period: La clase empieza en junio. These are different jobs, not competing translations for English “in” or “on.”
For the first day, speakers may use el primero de mayo as well as a cardinal number in many contexts. For the other days, cardinal numbers are standard: el dos de mayo, el dieciséis de mayo. The Spanish numbers 1–100 chart supplies the forms needed for dates without duplicating a full numbers lesson here.
Numeric dates can be ambiguous across countries and systems. 03/04/2027 may
be read as 3 April or March 4. For travel, medicine, contracts, and deadlines,
write the month in words or confirm the requested format.
Say years and ask for a date
Spanish normally reads a year as a full cardinal number rather than splitting it into two pairs the way English often does. 2028 is dos mil veintiocho. A short exchange can combine the date, weekday, and time:
¿Qué fecha es la conferencia? — El 18 de septiembre de 2028.
What date is the conference? — September 18, 2028.
¿Qué día cae? — Cae lunes.
What day does it fall on? — It falls on Monday.
¿A qué hora empieza? — A las nueve y media.
What time does it start? — At nine thirty.
The month page owns the calendar name and date link. The days of the week in Spanish guide owns lunes through domingo, while what time is it in Spanish owns clock expressions. Keeping those jobs separate makes it easier to correct one piece of a real appointment.
Seasons do not map to the same months everywhere
Month names are stable; their weather and seasonal associations are not. December is winter in much of the Northern Hemisphere and summer in much of the Southern Hemisphere. Tropical, high-altitude, coastal, and local climates may not fit a simple four-season model at all.
Therefore, diciembre means December, not “winter month.” If a conversation depends on weather, school terms, public holidays, religious observances, or opening hours, confirm the location and year. A sample sentence such as Nieva en enero is only true for some places, not a language rule.
A four-pass month practice routine
Use retrieval rather than reading the chart repeatedly:
- Sequence pass: cover the Spanish column and say the twelve names from January to December, then check spelling.
- Anchor pass: attach four real dates to the correct month: a birthday, an appointment, a trip, and a recurring deadline.
- Build pass: say each as el + number + de + month, then add a year to two of them.
- Conversation pass: let a partner ask ¿Qué fecha es? and ¿En qué mes? Answer once with a precise date and once with the month alone.
Try this six-item check without looking:
- Which month comes after abril?
- Correct the ordinary sentence Viajo en Agosto.
- Translate “on February 14.”
- Translate “in November.”
- Write July and June without swapping them.
- Ask “What date is the meeting?”
| Item | Answer |
|---|---|
| 1 | mayo |
| 2 | Viajo en agosto. |
| 3 | el 14 de febrero |
| 4 | en noviembre |
| 5 | julio; junio |
| 6 | ¿Qué fecha es la reunión? |
For spoken recall, put the four-pass routine into a calendar role-play with the AI Spanish tutor. Ask it to vary dates and request confirmation; do not ask it to invent an actual flight, medical, school, or business schedule.
For a broader progression from alphabet and numbers into conversation, return to the learn Spanish pillar; this page remains the bounded month-and-date reference inside that path.
Limits and commercial disclosure
Date order, abbreviations, first-day-of-week settings, seasons, and official style can vary by country and organisation. This guide teaches broadly useful month names and date patterns, but it cannot verify a deadline, holiday, appointment, or local calendar. Confirm high-stakes dates with the responsible source and repeat the month in words when numeric notation could be ambiguous.
Pronunciation cues are approximate, and no native-speaker review or native recording is claimed. LinguaLive sells commercial AI speaking practice and may benefit if a reader chooses the linked tutor. A chart, quiz, or rehearsal does not establish retention, fluency, search traffic, or a product outcome.
