Follow on LinkedInSpanish numbers become predictable after the first thirty: learn uno to quince, notice the joined spellings from dieciséis to veintinueve, then build most numbers from 30 to 99 with tens + y + unit. The number 100 is cien. Use the complete chart below to find any number, then practise hearing it inside prices, times, ages, and phone numbers.
The Real Academia Española guide to cardinal numbers documents the standard written forms and when cardinal numbers change. Its entry for uno supports the core meaning and forms behind uno, un, and una. These references establish spelling and grammar, not one universal accent or a promise that memorising a chart creates fluency.
Spanish numbers 0–100 chart
Read each row from left to right. Bold syllables carry the main stress in the pronunciation cue; the cue is approximate and should be checked against a speaker from the variety of Spanish you want to learn.
| Number or range | Spanish forms | Pattern and stress cue |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | cero | CE-ro |
| 1–5 | uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco | U-no; dos; tres; CUA-tro; CIN-co |
| 6–10 | seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez | seis; SIE-te; O-cho; NUE-ve; diez |
| 11–15 | once, doce, trece, catorce, quince | Mostly memorised: ON-ce through QUIN-ce |
| 16–19 | dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve | Joined dieci- forms; stress the final number sound |
| 20 | veinte | VEIN-te |
| 21–29 | veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés, veinticuatro, veinticinco, veintiséis, veintisiete, veintiocho, veintinueve | Joined veinti- forms; 22, 23, and 26 carry written accents |
| 100 | cien | cien, not ciento, when the number is exactly 100 |
The range rows are complete: after each named ten, combine it with every unit shown. For example, the 40–49 row gives cuarenta, cuarenta y uno, cuarenta y dos, through cuarenta y nueve.
The patterns that remove most memorisation
Numbers 0–15 need direct recall. From 16 onward, look for reusable blocks:
- dieci- joins to the unit in 16–19;
- veinti- joins to the unit in 21–29;
- from 31 to 99, write the ten, a separate y, and the unit;
- exact tens such as cuarenta have no y after them;
- exact 100 is cien.
Do not translate the English structure word by word. Forty-two is cuarenta y dos, but twenty-two is the single written word veintidós. Seventy is setenta, not a form built from siete while you are speaking.
Why 16–29 are written differently
Modern standard spelling joins the elements in dieciséis and the 20s. That creates written accent marks where normal Spanish stress rules would otherwise put the stress in the wrong place: veintidós, veintitrés, and veintiséis. The accents are part of the spelling, not optional pronunciation decorations.
Say the joined forms as one word. Breaking veintiuno into two English-like beats can make recognition harder when a shop assistant says it at normal speed. Start slowly, then shorten the gap until the form is continuous.
Uno, un, and una before nouns
When counting alone, use uno: uno, dos, tres. Before a masculine noun, uno commonly shortens to un: un libro and veintiún euros. Before a feminine noun, use una: una mesa and treinta y una personas. Agreement around larger numbers has additional details, so keep this beginner rule tied to the concrete noun in your sentence.
Compare three useful answers:
¿Cuántos billetes? — Uno. How many tickets? — One.
¿Cuántos billetes? — Un billete. How many tickets? — One ticket.
¿Cuántas entradas? — Veintiuna entradas. How many admission tickets? — Twenty-one tickets.
Hear numbers in prices, times, ages, and phone numbers
Number knowledge becomes practical when you predict the answer format. A price may contain euros, pesos, dollars, or cents; the guide to asking how much something costs teaches the full exchange. A clock answer usually starts with es la or son las; use the Spanish time guide for that pattern.
Numbers also combine with letters and calendar language. Use the Spanish alphabet spelling card for booking codes and email usernames, and the Spanish days-of-the-week planner for schedules such as el martes a las diez. If two values sound alike, the Spanish conversation-repair guide gives compact ways to request repetition and confirm the number.
Ages use tener: Tengo treinta años means “I am thirty years old.” Phone numbers may be grouped differently by country and speaker, so confirm the groups instead of assuming every person will read each digit separately.
A three-step number retrieval drill
- Read a prompt such as 47, say cuarenta y siete, and check the chart.
- Cover the Spanish, hear or imagine a context such as €63, and say sesenta y tres euros rather than the bare number.
- Reverse the task: read noventa y cuatro, write 94, then confirm it in a short question such as ¿Noventa y cuatro, verdad?
Use these ten prompts: 16, 22, 35, 47, 58, 63, 71, 86, 99, and 100. Repeat the set in a different order. The goal is reliable retrieval, not racing. For a speaking routine that combines recall with conversation, see how to practise Spanish with AI.
Common mistakes and chart limitations
Adding y everywhere. Use it in treinta y dos, but not in diecisiete, veintiocho, or an exact ten.
Dropping written accents. Keep the accents in dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés, and veintiséis.
Confusing cien and ciento. Exactly 100 is cien. Numbers above 100 begin with ciento, which is outside this page’s main range.
Treating pronunciation cues as exact. English approximations cannot encode every Spanish vowel, consonant, or regional sound. Listen to a native model and use the cues only to start.

Frequently asked questions
How do you count from 1 to 10 in Spanish?
Say uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Learn the sequence, then practise producing one number at random so recall does not depend on always starting at one.
Is 21 veintiuno or veinte y uno?
The standard modern spelling is veintiuno as one word. Before a masculine noun it may become veintiún, as in veintiún días.
When do Spanish numbers use y?
From 31 to 99, use y between a ten and a following unit: sesenta y cuatro. Do not add it to exact tens or the joined forms from 16 to 29.
What is the difference between cien and ciento?
Use cien for exactly 100 and before nouns in that exact amount. Ciento begins numbers above 100, such as 101, which this 0–100 chart does not cover.
