The days of the week in Spanish are lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, and domingo. Write them in lowercase in ordinary sentences. Use el for one specific weekday and los for a repeated weekday: el lunes means “on Monday,” while los lunes means “on Mondays.”

The Real Academia Española's entry for semana defines the general series as seven days from Monday to Sunday. Its capitalisation guidance says weekday names normally use lowercase, except when a larger proper name requires capitals, as in Viernes Santo. These sources support order and spelling; they do not determine every calendar interface, workweek, or local schedule.

Spanish days of the week chart

The cue shows stress for an English-speaking beginner. It is an approximation, not a substitute for hearing the whole word in the accent you need.

Day Spanish Approximate cue Stress and spelling note Example
Monday lunes LOO-nes Stress lu; no written accent El lunes trabajo.
Tuesday martes MAR-tes Stress mar Nos vemos el martes.
Wednesday miércoles MYEHR-ko-les Written accent marks miér La clase es el miércoles.
Thursday jueves HWEH-bes One smooth opening syllable Salgo el jueves.
Friday viernes BYEHR-nes Stress vier El viernes cenamos fuera.
Saturday sábado SAH-bah-doh Written accent marks Estudio el sábado.
Sunday domingo doh-MEEN-goh Stress min Descanso el domingo.

In accents with different consonant realisations, the exact sound of y, b, s, or final consonants can vary. Keep the written forms stable and treat the cues as memory prompts. The Spanish alphabet guide separates the names of letters from their sounds inside words.

Use el lunes for one Monday and los lunes for Mondays

Spanish commonly uses a definite article where English uses “on”:

Meaning Spanish pattern Example
on Monday el lunes La reunión es el lunes.
on Mondays los lunes Tengo clase los lunes.
every Monday cada lunes Practico cada lunes.
this Monday este lunes Empiezo este lunes.
next Monday el próximo lunes Viajo el próximo lunes.
from Monday to Friday de lunes a viernes Trabajo de lunes a viernes.
during the week entre semana Estudio entre semana.
at the weekend el fin de semana Descanso el fin de semana.

Do not insert en automatically before a weekday. La cita es el martes is a dependable way to say “the appointment is on Tuesday.” Other constructions can use en for a different reason, but English “on” does not create a one-to-one rule.

The article also carries number. El jueves identifies one Thursday; los jueves refers to Thursdays as a repeated schedule. That is why learning the article with the day is more useful than memorising seven isolated nouns.

Make weekdays plural correctly

All seven day names are masculine. The words ending in -s normally keep the same written form in the plural; the article makes the number visible. Sábado and domingo add -s.

Singular Plural Example meaning
el lunes los lunes Monday / Mondays
el martes los martes Tuesday / Tuesdays
el miércoles los miércoles Wednesday / Wednesdays
el jueves los jueves Thursday / Thursdays
el viernes los viernes Friday / Fridays
el sábado los sábados Saturday / Saturdays
el domingo los domingos Sunday / Sundays

Watch the written accents when adding plural -s: sábado becomes sábados. The accent remains because the stress remains on the first syllable.

Write weekdays in lowercase

In normal Spanish prose, write lunes and the other weekdays with a lowercase initial: Hoy es viernes. Capitalise one only when ordinary sentence position requires it or when it belongs to a larger proper name. Viernes Santo, for example, is a named religious observance rather than the ordinary weekday alone.

This differs from standard English styling, which capitalises Monday through Sunday. When translating a calendar, do not copy English capitalisation into Spanish automatically.

Ask and answer about schedules

The weekday becomes useful when it is attached to a question, time, and action:

¿Qué día es hoy? — Hoy es miércoles.

What day is it today? — Today is Wednesday.

¿Qué día tienes clase? — Tengo clase los martes y jueves.

What day do you have class? — I have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

¿Cuándo es la reunión? — El viernes a las diez.

When is the meeting? — Friday at ten.

¿Trabajas el sábado? — No, trabajo de lunes a viernes.

Do you work on Saturday? — No, I work Monday through Friday.

To add a clock time, use the patterns in what time is it in Spanish. For dates and quantities, the Spanish numbers 1–100 chart supplies the number forms without turning this page into a calendar-and-numbers course.

An audio-ready weekly rhythm script

These lines are arranged as short recordable units. Read each line, pause, then answer without looking. No native recording is embedded or claimed here.

  1. Sequence: lunes, martes, miércoles / pause / jueves, viernes / pause / sábado, domingo.
  2. Yesterday–today–tomorrow: Ayer fue martes. Hoy es miércoles. Mañana es jueves.
  3. Workweek contrast: Trabajo de lunes a viernes. Descanso el sábado y el domingo.
  4. Repeated schedule: Tengo clase los lunes y miércoles. Practico los viernes.
  5. Question and answer: ¿Qué día es la reunión? / pause / El jueves.

Once a recording exists, it should name the speaker's accent and preserve the same text so learners can compare audio with the printable chart. Until then, read the script with a teacher, trusted speaker, or text-to-speech tool whose limitations you understand.

Printable week planner

Copy the table and fill one real action per day. Use a specific day in the first round and a repeated routine in the second.

Day This week: el… Routine: los…
lunes _El lunes _____. _Los lunes _____.
martes _El martes _____. _Los martes _____.
miércoles _El miércoles _____. _Los miércoles _____.
jueves _El jueves _____. _Los jueves _____.
viernes _El viernes _____. _Los viernes _____.
sábado _El sábado _____. _Los sábados _____.
domingo _El domingo _____. _Los domingos _____.

Turn the planner into a speaking task:

  1. Say one true plan without showing your card.
  2. Let your partner ask ¿A qué hora? or ¿Todos los lunes?
  3. Answer with the day, a time, and one detail.
  4. Let your partner read the plan back for confirmation.
  5. Correct one detail politely, then swap roles.

For the greeting that fits the conversation itself, use good morning in Spanish or have a good day in Spanish; those pages own social greetings, while this one owns calendar language.

The final answer is intentionally open: connect the day to your real life. A schedule recalled from meaning is more useful in conversation than a sequence recited only as a song. The Spanish speaking-practice guide can turn the planner into a longer appointment or travel role-play.

Limits and commercial disclosure

Calendar settings, religious weeks, weekends, school timetables, and business hours vary. The article teaches general Spanish weekday forms and a Monday-to- Sunday reference sequence; it does not verify whether a particular organisation opens, closes, meets, or observes a holiday on any day. Confirm important travel, medical, legal, school, or work schedules with the responsible source.

Pronunciation cues are approximations and no native-reviewed audio is claimed. LinguaLive sells commercial AI speaking practice and may benefit if a reader chooses to rehearse this language. The planner and quiz do not prove retention, fluency, or a product learning outcome.
